Printer-friendly versionStress may not cause infertility, but we know - many of us from our own experience – that infertility causes stress. The physical, emotional and financial strains of infertility treatments can often cascade into depression and anxiety.
Couples who are trying to conceive are often consumed and overwhelmed with their quest for a child. The resulting psychological and social reactions have been characterized as the “crisis of infertility”. Studies indicate that the emotional impact of infertility is extensive and can include adverse behaviours, thoughts and feelings.
Furthermore, treatments to resolve infertility such as IVF can compound this situation as they are perceived to be socially, emotionally and physically demanding. There is also evidence indicating that the resulting distress can have a negative impact on pregnancy probabilities.
Counselling interventions can improve patients overall quality of life, as well as their response to the treatment process. IAAC highly recommends counselling before, during and after assisted reproduction treatment.
