Alternative Medicine
Printer-friendly versionMany fertility patients have found it helpful to seek complementary and alternative medicine treatments. These include a broad and diverse range of health care theories, practices and products that are not presently considered to be part of conventional medicine.
Three such alternatives are Acupuncture, Hypnotherapy and Naturopathic Medicine.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture therapy seeks to promote health while alleviating pain and suffering. It is an ancient method (at least 2000 years old, possibly much older) and is one of the main branches of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is now a regulated practice in many parts of Canada
Acupuncture applies the concepts of vital energy, energetic balance and energetic imbalance. The acupuncturist assesses the flow and distribution of vital energy within its pathways, known as meridians and channels.
The acupuncturist may be able to influence health and sickness by stimulating certain areas along these meridians. The aim is to adjust the vital energy so the proper amount reaches the proper place at the proper time. This may help the body heal itself.
Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy is a method used to develop personal insight and self-awareness in order to bring about a positive therapeutic result.
Hypnotherapy is often applied in order to modify a person's behavior, emotional content, and attitudes. In addition, it contends with a wide range of conditions including dysfunctional habits, anxiety, stress-related illness, pain management, and personal development.
Naturopathic Medicine
Naturopathic Medicine is an approach to health and healing that recognizes the integrity of the whole person.
Naturopathic Medicine is based on six fundamental principles of healing:
- The healing power of nature
- Identify and treat the cause
- First do no harm
- Treat the whole person
- The physician as teacher
- Prevention is the best cure
These principles are based on observations of the nature of health and disease, and are continually re-examined in light of scientific analysis.
